East Coast GRC Forward Singapore Dialogue
Advisors of EC GRC came to the Heartbeat to have a dialogue with residents and grassroot leaders on Forward Singapore. We need to refresh our social compact i.e., understand our respective roles and responsibilities and how all of us in society relate to one another. In short, we need to understand our obligations as individuals to one another and to society at large.
There are 6 pillars in Forward Singapore and it includes:
1. Empower: Economy & Jobs. Due to the volatility of the global environment, our economic growth is slowing down and with changing job roles, we need to help Singaporeans stay employed and employable.
2. Equip: Education & Lifelong Learning. We need to evolve to reduce overemphasis on grades alone, embrace diverse talents and strengths, strengthen lifelong learning to continually stay relevant and build resilience, creativity and innovation.
3. Care: Health & Social Support. Our social mobility is slowing due to our ageing population and low birth rates. The challenge is to keep Singaporeans healthy. A Healthier SG campaign will be launched next year by MOH to help all Singaporeans take steps towards better health.
4. Build: Home. To provide affordable homes and a land transport system that is inclusive and sustainable.
5. Steward: Sustainability. With greater threat of climate change, we need to look for new opportunities in a green and low-carbon global economy.
6. Unite: Singapore Identity. As Singapore is the most diverse country in the world, we need to strengthen our social cohesion in our multi racial and multi religious country.
A robust Q&A session ensued after the sharing session by the facilitators of the various pillars of Forward Singapore. The Advisors also shared their perspective on Forward Singapore. DPM Heng gave a good summation of the dialogue session and thanked everyone for giving up their precious Sunday morning to attend the dialogue today.
