Religious or spiritual practices involving incense originates in antiquity. From Europe to Asia, subscribers of faiths globally believe that incense fumes mark prayer, respect or sacrifice to the heavens, deities or ancestors. While incense fumes acts as a purifying and soothing element in faith, it is sensed as a polluting element and discomfort to others. ‘Holy Smoke!’ discusses the senses and spirituality of incense burning across our society.
Three speakers of well-scented standings and from different backgrounds, shared on their respective faith’s use and understanding of the smokes of spirituality. Mayor of South East District (Dr Maliki Osman) was the GOH at today's ‘Common Senses for Common Spaces’ (CSCS) interfaith dialogue. The auditorium was packed to the brim as the participants heard presentations from Taoism, Hindu and Islam on the significance of "smoke" in their respective faith. A lively discussion ensued after the presentation and the sharing was frank. It achieved CSCS objective of encouraging more intensive and effective inter-faith and racial engagements. This dialogue heighten the awareness, explained the significance of smoke and deepened the understanding on the 3 different faiths.
